Penguin in Manhattan

Penguins on the Set – Maid In Manhattan

I was just telling a coworker today that I have not had any time to watch TV. My focus has been on other things in the evenings and TV is not one of them.

One of the things I’ve been doing it getting my steps in on my Fitbit Alta. I can’t make my step goals if I’m sitting around watching TV!! I’ve had five 15k+ step days in the last week!! The pounds are coming off too, woot!!

Kayleigh and I did manage to watch Maid in Manhattan a few weeks ago. This movie came out in 2002 and stars Jennifer Lopez. It also stars Voldemort which I did not expect. Looking at his IMDB page, Volde… Ralph Fiennes has been in a ton of stuff! He’s mainly a villain, so this was quite refreshing!

He meets JLo at the hotel where she works thinking she is a guest staying there. She’s actually just trying on clothes that do not belong to her. It’s all good though, they go to a bunch of places together and fall in love, yay happy times! In the midst of it all they go to the zoo where they see some really cute penguins!! Click a pic to open the slideshow!

So cute!

If you’ve spotted a penguin in a show or movie let me know! I would love to feature you and your find on the blog!!

Penguins on the Set

Penguins on the Set – 50 First Dates

Penguins on the Set – 50 First Dates

I’ve been watching a lot of shows y’all! I have found some pretty cool penguins in the coolest places! But, not every show has a penguin, and I do like some shows that I will probably never spot a penguin in. The Vikings are pretty much staying north of the equator, so unless one of them hallucinates a penguin, it’s not going to happen. So, I searched around on the internet and came across a very informative site www.humanehollywood.org. This organization ensures that animal actors are being treated humanely. When you have a minute read all about their great work!

I searched for “penguin” on their site and found a ton of movies with penguins in them! They will be my filler posts when I haven’t been able to spot a penguin in any TV shows! The first movie on the list is 50 First Dates and is so cute! It has Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler and is a cute little romantic comedy that I have seen numerous times. Here’s an excerpt from the website on the penguin star:

Willie the Penguin

The penguin star of this movie belongs to the marine park’s bird show and is crate trained and handled often. After Jocko throws up on Alexa, Willie the penguin laughs heartily from the sidelines. For this sequence, trainers brought the bird over in a crate and released him to walk over to his mark. Willie looked around for a few moments until trainers called the penguin back over to his crate. As a safety precaution, crew members fenced off the walrus pool so that the animal could not escape into it, and the walrus was kept away from Willie.

This Penguin is Hung!

Penguins on the Set

Love penguin spotting when I’m watching TV! This week’s penguin in the house was a HUGE surprise.

I have voiced my concern about not finding penguins in my shows. So worried that I’ll go the whole season of a show without seeing one. Which sucks, because there are shows I really want to talk about! Man in the High Castle does not have a penguin in season one. ūüôĀ Maybe next season.

Well, I started watching Hung and wasn’t even thinking penguins when 33 seconds into the opening credits there is an ice cream shop with a big penguin on the side! What?! Awesome!

HUNG Penguin

Burk’s Igloo is a cute little ice cream shop in Hamtramck, Michigan!

Hung was a show on HBO from 2009-11. It seems like a pretty good show so far, but I’m only one episode in. If I spot any more penguins in future episodes, I’ll be sure to let y’all know!

I’m not that far into Bosch, but I found a penguin! Pretty early, but not first episode early! Bosch is a police drama starring Titus Welliver. Hottie!

I like the show so far, and good news, there is a Season 2! So, that must be a good sign. This penguin is in season 1, episode 3:

Bring It On (2000)

What a fun movie! If you’ve never seen Bring It On starring Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Bradford, and Eliza Dushku, you need to check it out! (Eliza is also in another show called Banshee, which aired its final episode on May 20, 2016, so of course, it’s on my watchlist now.)

Here we see Torrance¬†at Missy’s house, and apparently Missy likes Sanrio’s Badtz-Maru! So cute!

hUMANS PENGUINS

Penguins on the Set – Humans

Humans

My next three weeks of Penguins on the Set are all set! I got a couple of reader/daughter submissions, and I was also pleasantly surprised to spot a penguin on a show that I’m only two episodes into!

In a parallel present where the latest must-have gadget for any busy family is a ‘Synth’ – a highly-developed robotic servant that’s so similar to a real human it’s transforming the way we live.

-IMDb

Even though I’m early in the series, I am very impressed with this show! The mom looks very familiar although I can’t say I’ve seen anything she’s listed in on IMDb.

The premise is familiar, robots helping us with our lives, but things go wrong. I can’t wait to see more episodes! So, I’m watching the show and my daughter comes in, sits down and starts watching as well. ¬†Within a few minutes of her joining me, I do my OMG-I-THINK-I-SAW-A-PENGUIN thing where I get all giddy and quickly rewind. Confusion falls upon my daughter until she realizes that I have found another one!

I was pretty sure that it was a penguin ‘H’, but I Googled it anyway… sure enough! My specific search for “animal letters penguin H” brought up this set on Amazon, Djeco Animal Wooden Letter – H – penguins! So cute! Also, so glad that Kayleigh has an H in it! She may be 21 soon, but that doesn’t mean I can’t get her some cute animal letters for her door! ūüôā

Penguin on the Set

Watch Penguins on the Set Explode – The Flash

The shows I’m watching for this segment of the blog are all pretty great. There are some I watch (Vikings, I’m looking at you) where the chances to spot a penguin are slim to none. If I haven’t found a penguin to post for the week I will skip those types of shows in favor of better penguin odds. I hadn’t found a penguin yet, but I agreed to watch The Flash with my son. For some reason, I didn’t expect to find a penguin on this one. I guess because Batman’s Penguin is in a different world? The Flash is in the Marvel Universe. Anyway, it’s a show we both enjoy, so I only watch it when we can do so together. We’re only on season one, so no spoilers,y’all!

So, we’re sitting there watching the 21st episode of season one, Grodd Lives, and all is normal when suddenly, you know what’s coming, you know what I’m about to say, right? I SAW A PENGUIN!

The Flash - Penguin Shot 1
The Flash – Penguin Shot 1

I could not hold in my excitement and Cody was all, “What is wrong with you, Mom?” The penguin was still on the screen and I’m all “you don’t know?” I had to rewind to the beginning of the penguin scene and let him figure it out.

The Flash - Penguin Shot 2

So awesome! Except the part where it blows up.

It’s so exciting to see a penguin on a show when I’m not actively looking for one! Maybe I should take that approach more often! After all…

4 More Pop Penguins

Previously on “Penguins on the Set” I featured a very cute movie Mr. Popper’s Penguins. This week I have four more cute penguins from Mary Poppins!

Mary Poppins debuted in August of 1964 and won five Academy Awards:

  • Best Actress – Julie Andrews
  • Best Film Editing
  • Best Original Music Score
  • Best Visual Effects
  • Best Original Song –¬†“Chim Chim Cher-ee”

Of course the film won for best visual effects, because they added animated penguins! They are adorable with their little bow ties! Dick Van Dyke is a cute young fellow as well! Did you see the flash mob for his 90th birthday this past December? So awesome!

Look at these 3 Awesome Penguins on the Screen

Penguins on the Set, uh Screen!

This week I’m featuring some cartoon penguins, so they’re not really on a set. They are on the screen!

They are from an animated show called Gravity Falls produced by Disney. My daughter sent in this entry, so I’m not real sure what this show is all about. I have to consult Wikipedia which says, “The series follows the adventures of Dipper Pines (voiced by Jason Ritter) and his twin sister Mabel (voiced by Kristen Schaal) in the fictional town of Gravity Falls, Oregon, while on summer vacation.” This screenie is from S2E19: “Weirdmageddon 2: Escape from Reality”. They are introduced by the blond dude who says, “Now come have rad snacks served by awesome penguins!”

This week Netflix is taking us back to December 17, 1998. This is mainly because in all the new shows I’m watching I was unable to spot a penguin. Here’s a list of my shows so far:

Way back in the 90s there was a show called Friends. On this show, there is a friend named Joey. Joey owns a penguin named Huggsy. Huggsy is included in this week’s Penguin on the Set! So many penguins in this episode: Friends, S5, Ep10, 17 Dec. 1998 The One with the Inappropriate Sister.

Transparent Penguin

You do not even know how excited I get when I see a penguin on a show I’m watching. If they made real chill pills I would have to pop one before each episode. Oh, I guess that would be a valium or something. I don’t want to do that because then the penguins I see may or may not be real. I do want to share them with y’all, soooo…. here’s this week’s Penguins on the Set!

I’ve been watching another Amazon original called Transparent. It’s a drama/ comedy starring Jeffrey Tambor and Judith Light. You may remember Tambor from The Ropers back in¬†1979/ 80, or more recently in Arrested Development 2003-2013. He has a very long list on IMDB so I’m sure you’ve seen him in something. Light was the star of Who’s the Boss back in 1984-92. More recently for her is the Dallas reboot 2013-14. She has a long list as well. The rest of the cast is great as well. The casting of the Pfefferman kids as adults and kids is amazing.

So, I’ve been watching this show for a little while. I had actually given up on seeing a penguin in this show, because it seemed like they were always in the same places. Well, Judith’s character decided to go visit Aunt Judy and lo and behold Aunt Judy had a stuffed penguin sitting on her lap. How excited was I? So excited y’all!

But wait! In my excitement I almost didn’t realize there were more penguins on the coffee table.

But wait again! When I took in the whole picture I realized the entire freakin’ room was full of penguins!

Penguins in tha Fridge!

Welcome to this week’s Penguins on the Set! Today I’m taking y’all way back to 1994. Ace Ventura Pet Detective! Jim Carrey was very funny in this movie way back when. Obviously from the movie’s title, you know that he’s a pet detective. He also houses a lot of pets in his abode. The penguins live in the fridge and have a “penguin” door to come and go as they please.

So cute! Who knew he would later be sharing a set with even more penguins on Mr. Popper’s Penguins in 2011? Another cute movie!!

Penguins on the Set – Master of None

Last week I told y’all how worried I was whenever I started watching a new show. Will I have to watch tons of episodes before I spot a penguin? Well, this week’s show put my nerves at ease straight out of the gate, with not one, but two penguins in the first episode!

Master of None

Back in February, I shared an episode from Parks and Recreation. That show’s finale was February 24, 2015, but you can still watch it on Netflix. One of the actors who was on P&R is Aziz Ansari. Y’all, he is hilarious. He’s a stand-up comedian with a bunch of his stand-up shows also on Netflix. He co-created a new gem called Master of None, which follows the life of his character named Dev, a 30-year old actor in New York. It is a Netflix original, so you can watch it there.

I haven’t gotten to watch much of the show yet, because as I said before, I found penguins in episode ONE.

When I saw this hat on this kid I was giddy.

Took my screenshots and continued watching, not knowing I would see another just a few scenes later.

MasterofNone Season 1 Episode 1 Plan B - 2
Penguin softie, yay! Master of None Season 1 Episode 1 Plan B

I will definitely watch more episodes of this. I read that his real parents are in it! Season 2 is confirmed as well, so that’s a good sign! I’m kind of worried for next week’s segment though! I don’t have anything in the queue for Penguins on the Set! If you see one on TV let me know!

Penguins on the Set – A Penguin Walks into a Bar

No, this is not about the little penguin that was lost in Tasmania earlier this week. ¬†This is the 5th installment of “Penguins on the Set!”

Colony

The previews of this show caught my eye because Josh Holloway. OMG so hot. Y’all remember him from “Lost” right?Josh Holloway

Basically, aliens have landed and they are taking over. We don’t see any aliens though. So far they have only been mentioned, but no sign of E.T. anywhere.

I always worry when I start a show. How many episodes will I need to watch before a penguin appears? Will there even be one? So, it usually makes me very excited when I do see a penguin! Well, when I saw this one in the fourth episode, I was all “is that a penguin?” Sure enough! There he was on the bar!

colony-season1-episode4-BlindSpot
Colony Season 1, Episode 4 – Blindspot

I¬†searched on Amazon to see if “penguin shaker”¬†was a thing, and yep!

So cute! I’m putting it on my wish list!

I’m really enjoying all my research for this segment of the blog. Watching TV, what a chore. ūüôā

You can watch Colony on its network USA, but you will need to sign in with your TV provider. Netflix has Season 1. Or, you can buy a season pass on Amazon Instant Video.

Pig Rescues Penguin

Pig Rescues Penguin

This may be the cutest “Penguins on the Set” ever! Considering this is the fourth installment of the series, I will say it is definitely the fluffiest one so far!

The Muppet Show

The Muppet Show¬†aired on TV from 1976-1981. I used to watch it with my dad. I can remember watching TV with him and laughing when the laugh track would play. I didn’t want him to think I didn’t know what was going on.

The Muppets

The Muppets are back on TV, y’all! It airs on ABC, Tuesdays at 7:30 central. I have to admit, I have only watched this one episode because I do not have regular TV. We watch our shows on Amazon, Netflix, and Hulu.

S1 E11 – Swine Song

Why have I only watched one episode? While curating the web for penguin items to talk about, I saw this cute little muppet! I had to skip to episode 11 to see him!

MuppetPenguin

His name is Gloria Estefan. Miss Piggy claims to have “saved” him from a frozen beach in Argentina. I’m going to add some canon to make this believable¬†because y’all, this baby penguin is an Emperor and they don’t have those in Argentina. So, let’s say that Piggy took a side-trip to the Antarctic. We’ll even say that she went on a¬†Quark Expedition. Gloria acquired! And oh so cute!

MuppetPenguin2

Argentina Baby Penguins

So, what chicks could Piggy have picked up in Argentina? She could have gotten a Southern Rockhopper, Macaroni, Magellanic, or Gentoo penguin! Here are what those babies look like:

So, Gloria is definitely an Emperor. Here we see her mimicking the baby on TV.

MuppetPenguin5

This one is probably my favorite screen-cap. Uncle Deadly is babysitting and puts Gloria inside a bookshelf.
MuppetPenguin4

I plan on watching this series from the beginning. Looks like all episodes are available on Hulu, yay! I did read that the first half of the season had terrible reviews. They brought in a new showrunner mid-way through and it looks good now!

A Penguin Wedding

In this week’s edition of Penguins on the Set we find Tux & Flipper!

These are two very cute African Penguins that appeared on an episode of Parks and Recreation back on September 17, 2009. Very funny show that always made me laugh!

Brief overview of this episode – City buys two penguins for zoo, Leslie hopes to promote zoo by having a wedding for the penguins, after the wedding finds out they’re both guy penguins, gay community throws party for Leslie, family values gal gets mad at Leslie, Leslie tells gal¬†off on TV, Leslie sells penguins to zoo in Iowa where gay marriage has been legal since April 3, 2009. It was a very funny episode, you can watch it on Netflix, Parks and Recreation, Season 2 Episode 1 – Pawnee Zoo.

Here are the screen-caps of the cuties!

The Killing Penguin

Please don’t be fooled by the title, there are no penguins on a killing spree. What there is though, is a Penguin on the Set!

A while back a friend of mine suggested I watch The Killing. I’ve had it on my watchlist¬†ever since and just haven’t gotten around to doing so. Until now and OMG y’all this show is good! When I’m watching a show, I don’t “like” it on Facebook, and I try to avoid all spoilers. However, I do know that the show’s last season is coming up, which oddly enough, is when I tend to begin a series.

Anyway, this show is about a murder. Unlike other murder shows, this one follows the investigation of one case for the whole season. It’s a nice pace which allows you to really get to know the characters. Obviously, it’s a¬†serious show, so when the penguin appeared on a shelf in this scene, it was (kind of like the title of this post) a juxtaposition of emotions. I was into the grimness¬†of the moment, but got giddy anyway because PENGUIN! I think I may even own this penguin.

So here is this week’s Penguin on the Set!

The Killing – Season 1 Episode 8 Stonewalled

That’s Rosie’s mom, y’all; and she’s not happy.

Hope y’all have a great Friday! Tune in next week for another episode of Penguin on the set!

New Feature

Part of my desk job is filing a mound of paperwork. Rather than utilize paper files, I take take about an hour each day to scan the documents onto our network drive. This provides me with easy access should a customer request a copy. While I’m mindlessly scanning documents I also watch some shows. I have my current lineup of Blindspot, Mr. Robot, The Expanse, and Downton Abbey. I don’t watch Game of Thrones at work because, well, boobs.

So, there comes a time when all of my current shows have all been watched. No new episodes for their hiatus times, or waiting for a new season to start up. When this happens I have my go-to-I-need-to-catch-up-on-this-great-show Grimm. This show is funny and suspenseful and sometimes sad. All around good watch. Since I don’t view this one daily I have about four¬†seasons left to go on my Amazon Prime watch-list.

All of this set-up is to introduce a new feature (I guess they’re all new since this is only my third post) called “Penguins On the Set”. You see, the other day I was watching Grimm and suddenly penguins appeared on my screen. I think I may have squealed out loud, but who cares OMG PENGUINS! I just had to incorporate them into my blog somehow, so here they are!

2016-02-02_12h20_45.png
Screen-capture of Grimm Season 2 Episode 4: Quill

Aren’t they cute? Hopefully I will be able to find a lot of penguins in the shows I watch. Y’all know what this means? I have to make time to watch more shows! Then, when people ask me what I did last night, I can answer “Oh, I stayed up late doing research for my blog.” So legit.
