African Penguin

African Penguin (Spheniscus demersus)

Family – Spheniscidae
Genus – Spheniscus
Species – demersus
Size – 24 to 28 inches tall
AKA – Jackass Penguin
Diet – Anchovies please!

Habitat – south-western coast of Africa

These penguins are on the endangered species list. A large reason for this is because humans took their guano to use for fertilizer. The guano is used for insulation of their eggs, so no guano is no bueno. There are conservation efforts though! The African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary (APSS) builds penguin houses which aides in the breeding efforts. So awesome!

Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds also helps tremendously.

SANCCOB is a registered non-profit organisation (NPO 003-134) whose primary objective is to reverse the decline of seabird populations through the rescue, rehabilitation and release of ill, injured, abandoned and oiled seabirds – especially endangered species like the African penguin.

And y’all can adopt a penguin here! Not to take home, but they’ll send pics! What a great way to save the penguins!
